SNG Strategy Tips

Playing in a sit and go tournament in an online poker room means that there is a pre-selected amount of player spots available. As soon as enough people fill the spots, the tournament begins. These types of tournaments are very popular online and most often players will not need to register to play. Yachting Poker has some tips to help our players get started in Sit and Go tournaments.

1. Don’t gamble early in the tournament. Only play your premium hands in the early stages of the tournament.

2. If you happen to have a pair in the pocket, you should call, but only about 1/15 of your total chips. Let’s say you have 1000 chips, if you can call for less than 70 chips, you should do so. The best strategy is to flop a set or an over pair. If you don’t flop a set or an over pair, you should fold.

3. Betting after the flop should consist of no less than one-third to one-half of the pot. Avoid giving your opponents a drawing hand and better odds to call. If they hit their draw, now they can put you all-in.

4. Suppose you have KK and you happen to be the second person to raise, a good rule of thumb is to raise the size of the pot. Really commit your opponent after the flop.

5. It is almost always better to be the one betting than it is to be the one raising or the one calling. If you are in an all-in situation, it is preferable to have ‘fold equity’, meaning your opponent folds and you avoid the showdown. However, you need a strong hand to call all-in, stronger than if you are raising in an all-in.
